چکیده

A code that models signals produced by charge-exchange reactions between fast ions and injected neutral beams in tokamak plasmas is described. With the fastion distribution function as input, the code predicts the efflux to a neutral particle analyzer (NPA) diagnostic and the photon radiance of Balmer-alpha light to a fastion Dα (FIDA) diagnostic. Reactions with both the primary injected neutrals and with the cloud of secondary ”halo” neutrals that surround the beam are treated. Accurate calculation of the fraction of neutrals that occupy excited atomic states (the collisionalradiative transition equations) is an important element of the code. Comparison with TRANSP output and other tests verify the solutions. Judicious selection of grid size and other parameters facilitate efficient solutions. The output of the code has been validated by FIDA measurements on DIII-D but further tests are warranted. PACS: 52.55.Pi, 52.65.Pp, 52.70.Kz

Time-resolved ion energy distribution measurements using an advanced neutral particle analyzer on the MST reversed-field pinch.

An advanced neutral particle analyzer (ANPA) capable of simultaneously measuring hydrogen and deuterium ions of energies up to 45 keV has recently been developed for use on the Madison Symmetric Torus. The charge-to-mass separation allows for separate analysis of bulk deuterium ions and hydrogen ions injected with a 1 MW, 25 keV neutral beam. Orientation of the ANPA allows sampling of different...

Calibration of an advanced neutral particle analyzer for the Madison Symmetric Torus reversed-field pinch.

A new E∥B neutral particle analyzer, which has recently been installed on Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) reversed-field pinch (RFP), has now been calibrated, allowing the measurement of the fast ion density and energy distribution. This diagnostic, dubbed the advanced neutral particle analyzer (ANPA), can simultaneously produce time resolved measurements of the efflux of both hydrogen and deuter...

Self Consistent Calculations of Ion Cyclotron Resonance Heating in Toroidal Plasmas

A method for self consistent calculations of ion cyclotron resonance heating has been developed. The dielectric tensor is calculated from a particle distribution function calculated with the orbit averaged Monte Carlo code fido. The tensor is then fed into the global wave code lion. The calculated wave field and power partitions are fed back into the fido code. By using two existing codes in an...

Energy Gain of Magnetized Cylindrical D-T Targets in Fast Ignition Fusion

In recent years, many different plans have been considered to use the nuclear energy gained from inertial confinement fusion (ICF) as attempts to obtain high energy efficiencies. In conventional ICF methods, a small amount (about mg) of the deuterium–tritium compound is confined in a small spherical chamber of a few millimeters in radius and compressed by laser or heavy ion beams with powers in...
